Saint James is a hamlet in the Town of Smithtown, the same town where my office is based, named in the 1850s after Saint James Episcopal Church. In the early 1900s it was a summer retreat for stage and screen stars like the Barrymores, Buster Keaton, and Irving Berlin, and it’s still home to the St. James General Store on Moriches Road, said to be the oldest continuously operating general store in the country, along with the historic Saint James District lining Route 25A.
